The Death of Jezebel (1868) by the French painter Jean Joseph Benjamin Constant (1845-1902).
It’s a very traditional view of Jezebel’s death. She had already received what she deserved and the triumphant Jehu watches how the dogs are devouring her body.
I look forward to your posts. This is a pretty gruesome piece, but that's what happened. It would've been so much more gory had it been done in color. Thanks for posting.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Constant, above all because he was a real good orientalistic and history painter.
Maybe this was a kind of sketch for a greater painter.
The way the color is so bland, definitely is pointing to a larger theme..Perhaps..
