Jezebel’s Cruel Death

The Death of Jezebel (1868) by the French painter Jean Joseph Benjamin Constant (1845-1902).

It’s a very traditional view of Jezebel’s death. She had already received what she deserved and the triumphant Jehu watches how the dogs are devouring her body.

  1. I look forward to your posts. This is a pretty gruesome piece, but that's what happened. It would've been so much more gory had it been done in color. Thanks for posting.

  2. Thanks.
I agree with Constant, above all because he was a real good orientalistic and history painter.
Maybe this was a kind of sketch for a greater painter.

  3. The way the color is so bland, definitely is pointing to a larger theme..Perhaps..
