Susanna bathing by the Polish Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980).
Lempicka was a great star of the art scene in the 1920s and 1930s. Her Susanna is a modern woman of the 1930s and there is absolutely no sign of historicization.

I never know that Lempicka have paint Woman naked.
ReplyDeleteThe modeling of the body seems milder than in other works. However, in the panels themselves are clearly the characteristics.
Indeed, it's a little strange. Because Lempicka painted normally neither historical nor mythological scenes. Besides "Susanna" I know only one "Andromeda" which is also a nude.
ReplyDeleteProbably these biblical and mythological women were painted nude because of art tradition.
I love this one. It's always refreshing to see a good Modernist treatment of a classical subject.
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely picture by Tamara Lempicka, actually its quite classical compared with a lot of her stylish Art Deco work. Have a look at some of her other pictures on my website www.decolish.com/ArtDecoArtists.html
ReplyDeleteCheers. Lesley
